Wildlife Tracking: Modern Applications for a Skill Older than Humanity - Presented by Phil Johnston

Phil Johnston is a professional wildlife tracker and mountain lion biologist for the California Department of Fish & Wildlife where he leads mountain lion research and management in the eastern Sierra, pioneering non-lethal strategies to protect endangered Sierra bighorn from mountain lion predation. Phil is a Track and Sign Evaluator with CyberTracker and Tracker Certification North America and is passionate about making wildlife tracking a more accessible skill to people from all walks of life, as well as improving accuracy in scientific data collection.

Phil will also be leading Track and Sign Workshop and Certification – September 12 & 13, 2026   From 8am to 5pm each day starting in Arcata and traveling around 45 minutes to nearby field locations.
