Talk Title: What Happened December 5th? Investigating the Tsunami Threat from the M7.0 Mendocino Fault Earthquake.
Talk Description:
What happened during the M7.0 Mendocino Fault earthquake on December 5th, 2025? Join us during March Tsunami Awareness Month with Dr. Lori Dengler, our very own local expert on earthquakes and tsunamis. Learn about her current geophysics research on earthquake and tsunami hazards. Explore tsunami monitoring here in Humboldt Bay and Crescent City. Learn about tsunami amplification along the North Coast. Are you prepared for the big one?
Speaker Bio:
Lori Dengler is a Professor Emeritus of Geology at Cal Poly Humboldt and our local expert in tsunami and earthquake hazards. For more than 30 years, Lori has made it her mission to bring science and preparedness to the public, surrounding earthquakes and tsunamis both in California and around the world. She is a highly esteemed expert in her field and has been involved in many projects and research throughout the years.
Dr. Dengler’s work includes her current geophysics research on earthquake and tsunami hazards, including tsunami monitoring in Humboldt Bay, Crescent City, and tsunami amplification along the North Coast. She served as a member of the group that developed the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program and authored the program’s initial Strategic Implementation Plan. Dr. Dengler was a founding member of the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group in 1996, which brought together local, state, tribal, and federal agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and businesses to reduce and learn more about seismic risks along California’s northern coast.
"Living on Shaky Ground: How to Survive Earthquakes and Tsunamis in Northern California," a preparedness guide developed by Dengler, has become a model for similar citizen guides throughout California.
Dengler received her bachelor’s (1968), master’s (1973), and Ph.D. (1979) degrees in geophysics from the University of California, Berkeley. She has served as the director of the Humboldt Earthquake Education Center since 1986, was recognized as Humboldt State University’s Scholar of the Year in 2008, and was the 2009 recipient of the Alfred E. Alquist Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Earthquake Safety.
